How to obtain the Ring of Suffering in Old School RuneScape

The Ring of Suffering is a high-end Zenyte ring valued for its strong defensive bonuses, Prayer boost, and the ability to store massive recoil charges. The imbued version, the Ring of Suffering (i), further improves stats and is a staple for many high-level PvM setups (Zulrah, GWD tanking, Wilderness bosses, etc.). Getting one requires several steps—questing, farming or buying materials, crafting, enchanting, and charging or imbuing. Below is a streamlined, step-by-step guide.

Overview of benefits

+10 to all defensive stats

+4 Prayer bonus

Can store recoil charges (uncharged does not reflect damage)

Imbued variant increases defensive bonuses and is preferred for endgame PvM

Step 1 — Finish Monkey Madness II

Requirement: complete the grandmaster quest Monkey Madness II. This unlocks demonic gorillas, the primary source of Zenyte shards.

Preparation: bring high combat stats, strong gear, supplies, and practice the mechanics beforehand. The quest and the unlocked content are challenging.

Step 2 — Acquire a Zenyte shard

Main source: demonic gorillas (post-quest). Drops are rare, so expect extended grind time unless you have very high DPS setups.

Alternative: buy a Zenyte shard on the Grand Exchange if you have enough GP. Farming takes time; buying costs OSRS gold but is faster.

Step 3 — Craft a Zenyte ring

Materials: 1 Zenyte shard + 1 gold bar.

Requirement: 89 Crafting (87 with a +2 boost).

Method: use the Zenyte shard on a furnace while carrying a gold bar to make an unenchanted Zenyte ring.

Notes: you can temporarily boost Crafting with consumables (e.g., stew) but those methods carry randomness. If you can't meet the level, consider paying a trusted player to craft it—use safe trading practices.

Step 4 — Enchant into the Ring of Suffering

Requirements: 93 Magic and the Enchant Level 7 Jewelry spell.

Runes needed: 20 Soul, 20 Blood, 1 Cosmic (per enchant).

Cast the spell on the Zenyte ring to create the Ring of Suffering.

Training Magic: efficient methods include bursting, bossing, or using high-alchemy where appropriate; pick what fits your resources and playstyle.

Step 5 — Charge the ring

Uncharged Ring of Suffering does not reflect damage. To enable recoil, you load charges into it using Rings of Recoil.

Each Ring of Recoil gives 40 charges. The Ring of Suffering stores up to 100,000 charges (equivalent to 2,500 Rings of Recoil).

Method: use Rings of Recoil on the Ring of Suffering from the inventory or check the ring's interface and add charges.

Benefit: once charged, it reflects automatically without breaking like a normal Ring of Recoil, saving inventory space and supplies.

Optional — Imbue the ring (create Ring of Suffering (i))

Imbuing increases defensive bonuses and is highly recommended for serious PvM.

Methods: use points from Nightmare Zone or Soul Wars to imbue. Nightmare Zone tends to be more AFK-friendly; Soul Wars can be faster if you're efficient.

Consider which minigame fits your time and playstyle to obtain the required points.

Best uses and why it's worth it

Excellent for long PvM trips where passive recoil and high defense matter (Zulrah, GWD tanks, Wilderness bosses).

Reduces inventory clutter by storing recoil charges, which is helpful on extended bossing sessions.

High initial cost (either time farming shards or GP buying materials), but strong long-term value through survivability improvements and buy OSRS gold reduced supply consumption.

Tips and cautions

If you don't want to farm shards, investing gold via bossing, skilling, or flipping is often the fastest route.

Beware of third-party gold sites and trading outside official channels—violating game rules can risk your account. Always follow Jagex rules and the Grand Exchange for safe purchases.

Consider whether you'll imbed the ring later; if so, plan points farming (NMZ/Soul Wars) accordingly.

To get a Ring of Suffering you must: finish Monkey Madness II, obtain a Zenyte shard (farm or buy), craft a Zenyte ring at high Crafting, enchant it at 93 Magic, and charge it with Rings of Recoil. Imbuing the ring for the (i) variant is optional but recommended for endgame content. The process requires time or gold, but it rewards you with one of the most useful defensive rings for high-level PvM.
