Elden Ring: How to Unlock the Lord of Frenzied Flame Ending

Apr-06-2025 PST Category: Elden Ring

Among Elden Ring's many conclusions, none is more chaotic—or more infamous—than the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending. Often referred to by the community as "the bad ending," this path leads to a complete rejection of order and ushers in a new age of madness and destruction. If you're looking to break the cycle of the Erdtree and plunge the Lands Between into fiery ruin, this guide will walk you through exactly how to do it.

But beware—this route is irreversible unless you jump through some very specific (and costly) hoops. Make sure you know what you're getting into before you seek out the embrace of the Three Fingers.

What Is the Lord of Frenzied Flame Ending

While most endings in Elden Ring allow the Tarnished to ascend as Elden Lord or choose a path of subtle deviation, the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending goes in the opposite direction. You don't just abandon the Greater Will—you declare war on it. Choosing this ending sets the world ablaze and breaks the cycle of grace entirely, spreading madness across the Lands Between.

It's a tragic, powerful, and unforgettable finale—but reaching it isn't easy. You'll need to explore hidden areas, defeat formidable foes, and make some irreversible choices. Before you commit, consider backing up your save or preparing to use rare Elden Ring Items like Miquella's Needle if you want a way out.

Step 1: Defeat Mohg, the Omen

Your first major task is to defeat Mohg, the Omen, a powerful boss located beneath Leyndell, Royal Capital. Unlike Mohg, Lord of Blood, who resides in Mohgwyn Palace, this version is hidden deep in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, a secret, labyrinthine area beneath the city.

Access the area by starting at the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace and working your way down into the sewers. Be prepared: this zone is filled with strong enemies, cramped passages, and deadly traps. Bringing upgraded Spirit Ashes and powerful gear will help, and investing your Elden Ring Runes into Vigor and Endurance can go a long way here.

Mohg himself is no joke. His blood attacks and aggressive combos can overwhelm unprepared players, so make sure to bring fire-resistant gear and plenty of Elden Ring Items like Flask of Wondrous Physick mixes or status-healing consumables.

Step 2: Discover the Hidden Passage

After defeating Mohg, the next step is to find the hidden passage behind the altar in his boss room. This can be easily missed if you're not paying attention. Strike or roll into the altar, and it will vanish, revealing a concealed wall. From there, you'll descend a perilous path lined with platforming challenges and frenzied enemies.

This descent leads to a sealed door that can only be opened if your character is fully naked—meaning you must remove all weapons, armor, and talismans. Only then will the door open to reveal the lair of the Three Fingers.

Step 3: Embrace the Flame

Inside this secret chamber, you'll find the Three Fingers, the chaotic counterpart to the Two Fingers that guide the Elden Lords. Upon approaching them, you'll be forcefully grabbed and branded with the Frenzied Flame. This act irrevocably locks you into the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending—unless you later use Miquella's Needle (more on that below).

From this point on, your destiny is set. When you finish the game and approach Fractured Marika, you won't be given the option to become Elden Lord or choose alternate endings. You will ignite the world in a blaze of madness and destruction.

Can You Undo the Frenzied Flame

Yes, but only through one of the most difficult and obscure methods in the game.

To remove the Frenzied Flame and regain access to other endings, you must complete Millicent's questline, defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella, and use Miquella's Needle at Dragonlord Placidusax's arena in Crumbling Farum Azula. This needle is a one-time use Elden Ring Item that purges the Frenzied Flame and restores your eligibility for other endings.

Given the difficulty of this route, many players who accidentally lock into the Frenzied Flame path choose to restore a backup save or begin a New Game Plus.

Important Tips for Frenzied Flame Seekers

Prepare Beforehand: Once you inherit the flame, you can't equip certain armor or complete some questlines. Make sure you've wrapped up anything important.

Farm Elden Ring Runes: Strengthening your build is crucial, especially for handling Mohg and surviving the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. Farming spots like Mohgwyn Palace or the Haligtree can help you level efficiently.

Stock Up on Elden Ring Items: Consumables like Stanching Boluses, Clarifying Boluses, and buffs like Flame Cleanse Me can be lifesavers in madness-heavy areas. You'll also want to keep plenty of upgrade materials for your weapons and summons.
